Do you know why the Chip War is becoming a major concern for the Global Economy in the AI era?

Semiconductor chips are crucial components for everyday devices. Remarkably, TSMC in Taiwan alone produces approximately 90% of advanced processors. Building a chip factory costs around $35-43 billion.

Producing a chip requires a global supply chain. It combines American technology, Japanese chemicals, Dutch machinery, and more.

Recently, the United States has restricted sales of advanced AI and high-performance chips to China. It also requires Taiwan and South Korea, which use U.S. technology, to obtain permission before selling advanced chips to China. However, these restrictions don’t apply to regular consumer electronics and computer chips.

China has responded with countermeasures. The country now requires export licenses for rare earth metals like gallium and germanium used in chip production and has banned chip imports from the American company Micron.

Currently, China produces only 5.9% of its chip needs and spends as much on chips as it does on oil imports. Meanwhile, the United States aims to increase its advanced chip production to 20-30% by 2030.

This technology war is transforming global supply chains and affecting economic relationships between countries. While both sides face economic impacts, the United States currently has the upper hand. China is investing in improving its chip production capabilities but remains years behind in advanced chip technology.

As AI technology becomes increasingly important, the chip industry’s significance will continue to grow. Understanding the impact of this technology war has become crucial.
