Limits to Growth

To Be Smart, You Need to Know These Things
In life, we all encounter recurring barriers—mental blocks that often hold us back. Today, let’s talk about six types of personal cages that can limit our potential and how to overcome them.
1. Limits to Growth
At first, everything might seem great. Progress comes easily. But over time, you might notice it slowing down or even stopping entirely.
For example, many startups thrive in their early years but later plateau or decline. When this happens, it’s essential to ask, “Why is growth stalling?” and take actionable steps.
Using the IDEA Model we discussed earlier, you can identify the root causes and find solutions. What matters most is the willingness to confront these barriers and the determination to break through them.
2. The Solo Mindset
This cage stems from wanting all the credit for yourself.
For instance, trying to claim all the recognition at work might feel satisfying initially, but it often leads to failures in team projects. It’s natural for people to be egotistical, but significant achievements are rarely accomplished alone.
Learn to share credit and collaborate—it’s a vital skill for lasting success.
3. Escalation of Negativity
Negativity can build up over time, creating a downward spiral.
For example, if you constantly surround yourself with overly critical friends, you may find yourself growing bitter or defensive. Similarly, unresolved conflicts can escalate and make matters worse.
The key to breaking this cycle is learning to pause and reflect. If negativity dominates your life, take responsibility, and be the one to stop it.
4. Lowering the Goal
This mindset says, “This is good enough.” While it’s okay to take breaks, don’t let temporary setbacks turn into permanent limits.
Though I hesitate to mention it, this is especially relevant to the current situation in Myanmar.
Someone once asked me if education could be paused indefinitely. I told them, “Education is a lifelong journey. You can pause now, but you can’t stop forever.” Similarly, in life, whether you feel discouraged or want to give up, remember: You can pause, but never quit entirely.
5. Addiction (The cycle you can’t escape)
This is a common pattern that nearly everyone experiences.
For instance, you know you’re spending too much time on social media, but you can’t seem to stop. Maybe you catch yourself scrolling through TikTok during work hours, even when you know you should be focused.
Ask yourself, “Is this how I truly want to spend my life?” Reflect and make conscious choices to break free from these distractions.
6. Waiting Until Rock Bottom
Some people only change when they hit rock bottom.
For example, neglecting work, family, or health until everything collapses—and then realizing too late the importance of those things.
This post serves as a reminder to stay mindful. Don’t wait until you’re at your lowest to make a change—it only makes the journey harder.
The last thing I want to say is…
Change is a choice, and it’s in your hands.
I hope you make the right choices to live a free and fulfilling life.
